Trillium Health Resources Provides Funding to Digital Literacy Labs
Funding will help minimize the digital divide through access and skill development
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Trillium Health Resources is excited to announce funding to Life Springs Dream Center and ADLA Inc. to support the creation of two Digital Literacy Community Labs, part of these organizations Community Opportunity Centers. Trillium provided a total of $500,000 in funding to the two organizations to assist in construction, internet access, and equipment costs. As in many other places, Trillium’s rural counties can experience a digital divide for accessing the internet and proper equipment. Projects like these Digital Literacy Labs, and Governor Stein’s recent announcement of the Stop-Gap Solutions program, will both increase the skills and connections necessary to achieve digital literacy.
However, providing dependable Wi-Fi connections and devices is only the start. True digital literacy and access means having an email address so you can apply for new jobs. It means being able to connect to a provider via telehealth if you don’t have reliable transportation. It teaches parents about potential concerns and preventative steps to protect your child’s online safety. Along with physical access and equipment, ADLA and Life Springs Dream Center will also support teaching opportunities to support these skills and more. The podcast and YouTube video options in particular are already causing interest from younger community members.
Both locations will have the capacity to serve hundreds of people through job training, digital skill development, creative expression, and coding courses. Trillium will track future metrics and outcomes including how many people use the facilities for telehealth or digital skill development. As Northstar Digital Literacy Training sites, the facilities offer no cost digital education, creating a wider network of accessible digital literacy training and certification programs across North Carolina.
