Above all, use caution. As a storm moves out, we are anxious to return to our homes to assess damages and to begin to put our lives back together. Entering your home unprepared after a disaster can have risks. Some general safety tips include:
- If you notice any structural damage or have doubts concerning safety, contact a qualified building inspector or structural engineer.
- Do not enter if you smell gas, floodwaters remain around the house, or there is any fire damage.
- Watch out for any wildlife that may have entered the home, especially venomous snakes. Use a stick to poke through debris.
- Follow tips in the “Are You Ready?” guide under the recovery section.
- Safety information on utilities, water, and electric are available on the ReadyNC website.
- Ensure you use reputable companies if you have damage or trees down.
Accessing resources for rebuilding you are not alone in this process. Experts and organizations know the challenges of rebuilding after heavy storms.
